Our favourite places to sail on a Mediterranean yacht charter – Part two
The Mediterranean is unbeatable for its choice of beautiful sailing destinations to visit on a yacht charter holiday. Here is part two of our favourite locations for you to add to your holiday wish list.
There are two wonderful options when considering booking a Spanish yacht charter through LateSail, both of them offering different experiences but the same quality sailing adventure.
On the mainland, Barcelona is the perfect gateway for discovering the rocky Costa Brava coastline while combining your Spanish sailing holiday with the country’s magical cultural centre. From Barcelona, sail north on a short passage along the stunning Spanish coastline and visit some of the fabulous moorings dotted between there and Southern France.
Tossa de Mar is one of our favourites for sheltered coves and beaches and a day stop at Cala Llevado beach is highly recommended. You can also visit the hilltop ruins of Villa Vella and will be rewarded with stunning views out to sea. Lloret de Mar is popular with those looking for exciting nightlife and the town of Cadaques offers a mixture of relaxing beaches, art and history.
If it’s an island adventure you’re looking for, a yacht charter in Majorca may be just the thing! From the busy port town of Palma, you can easily explore the scenic coastline, stopping off to relax on the white sandy beaches of some of the island’s secluded bays. Pay a visit to the old fishing harbour of Puerto Soller where you can venture inland and discover the historic Torre Picarda or catch some rays on Cala Deia, where the shimmering cobalt waters are as inviting to humans as they are to the many species of fish that live within it! For a real treat, spend the night anchored off the edge of the Cabrera Island Nature Reserve and watch the sun go down over the tranquil view ahead of you.
Teeming with some of the world’s most intriguing history and blessed with year round warm weather and excellent sailing conditions, a yacht charter to Malta is one of our favourites here at LateSail and popular with our customers.
On the main island, Grand Harbour Marina is perfectly located for a visit to the ancient city of Valletta, the country’s capital. The city is surrounded by a magnificent wall, erected by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century and stands overseeing the many activities that take place within the grounds, today. While in Valletta, you’ll be spoilt for choice of breathtaking Baroque style architecture and a visit to St. John’s Cathedral is a must.
Once on board, sail north west from the base to the Maltese island of Gozo. This beautiful island is home to some fascinating history and some of the oldest temples in the world, the Ġgantija Temples, dating back to before the Pyramids of Egypt were built. The once popular Blue Window which sadly lost its battle with the elements in 2017 is now a wonderful diving site, and if you moor off the coast close to the area, you can literally spend an entire day diving the site in search of the once magnificent structure and meeting the local sea creatures that have made the limestone ruins their home.
The island of Comino with its breathtaking Blue Lagoon is a firm favourite with sailors who are looking for a spot of paradise. There an abundance of sheltered anchorages, perfect for spending the day snorkelling and swimming and the car free island itself is an inviting location for a day’s hiking.
With nearly 300km of unspoilt coastline, a yacht charter in Montenegro is a real treat for sailors looking for something a little different. Although Montenegro has grown in popularity over the recent years, it is still a quieter alternative to other major Mediterranean locations and offers excellent sailing conditions, ensuring you can combine your love of the sea with history, mystery and intrigue.
The 72km of sand and shingle beaches dotted along the long coastline are an inviting alternative for those looking to relax and top up their tan. One of our favourites is in Becici, where visitors can also take part in a number of watersports while spending the day here. We also recommend visiting the Bay of Kotor, with breathtaking fjords that some argue are the most beautiful in the world.
Sveti Stefan offers an Instagram-ready backdrop, and a walk along the soft shingle beach to the church and monastery is a must. No visit to Montenegro would be complete without spending some time in Budva. This medieval town offers visitors a mixture of beautiful beaches, exciting nightlife and fascinating history. Moor up and take a walk inland where you’ll find the old town of Stari Grad, protected by the stone walls built by the Venetians to protect the labyrinthine lanes that weave through the citadel. Enjoy stuffed peppers, meatballs and sauerkraut rolls when you visit some of the delicious restaurants situated in the area.
Located north of Italy, a yacht charter in Slovenia may seem like an unusual choice for your next sailing holiday but we strongly advise adding this as a contender when considering your next getaway. Part of the Istrian peninsula, Slovenia offers fabulous sailing conditions with plenty of secluded bays for anchorage.
Inland, explore Piran, a beautiful medieval village with lots of ornate architecture to discover and take a walk along the town wall to Tartini Square where you’ll find boutique style restaurants serving delicious Slovenian cuisine. In Duino, visit the ancient clifftop castle and take a walk along the Rilke Trail where you will be rewarded with stunning views out of the Gulf of Trieste.
Although it will require a full day inland and transport to get there, we strongly recommend that you take some time off from sailing to visit stunning Lake Bled. The beautiful scenery and tranquil environment offers visitors a real treat and if the sun is shining it’s impossible not to fall in love with Slovenia’s largest tourist attraction.
With a varied coastline that stretches for over 8,000km and is bordered by four different seas, a yacht charter in Turkey is a thrilling experience for any sailor. Our bases are located in some of the country’s most popular locations, each offering a different experience but all promising gorgeous sunshine and excellent sailing conditions.
Embark on a yacht charter in Bodrum and sail the Gulf of Gokova area of the Aegean Sea. Here, you can hop along the Seven Islands, beautifully located in the Gokova Bay and each offering serene beaches to relax on. Visit Cleopatra’s Beach, where the beautiful blue hues coming off the sea are an indication of the tranquility that the golden sands will offer. Make sure you spend a night anchored off the coastline and watch the sunset from your deck with a cold beer.
Further south and north of the Greek island of Rhodes, a yacht charter in Marmaris is a popular choice for those looking at sailing in Turkey. The clear waters of Bozuk Buku are ideal for swimming and snorkelling and a visit to Datca can be easily accessed when mooring at Keci Buku, where you can head ashore and dine in one of the town’s quaint restaurants, most of which serve delicious traditional Turkish cuisine. If you are sailing in the summer, head to Sogut where you will find a quiet anchorage that is ideal for shelter, and enjoy lunch at the only restaurant available in this area.
There is exceptional sailing on a yacht charter in Gocek. From the base at D-Marin Marina you can easily explore the Fethiye coastline and a visit to the postcard ready beaches of Olu Deniz are popular with most sailors. Head inland and visit the Lycian Tombs, resting places built into the cliff face and enjoy a range of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture as you walk along the Trail of the Lycians. The 12 islands of Fethiye that surround Gocek offer outstanding sailing and a visit to Kapi Creek and its beautiful bay are a must.
