It’s obvious why Greece’s many islands are among the most popular yacht charter destinations in the world. They have settled weather in high season, warm azure blue waters, small sheltered coves and beaches, combined with a wealth of local culture and some of the best Mediterranean cuisine you’ll taste.
When to go to Greece
The weather tends to be hot from May until end of September. High season is July and August. Although quieter in June and late September, weather conditions are still good.
Sailing and weather conditions in Greece
In the summer months there are usually light but steady north and north-westerly winds in the Ionian, with the maistro winds appearing in the afternoon. The Sporades and Cyclades have prevailing north-eastern and north-western winds, with stronger meltemi winds in July and August. The Saronics are sheltered so good for beginner sailors.
Ports and facilities in Greece
Greek ports and marinas are a simple affair compared to other countries. It can be easy to moor up at most quaysides and inlets without paying a fee – usually you would be expected to eat in the local taverna. Some places have fueling points but usually fuel is delivered by tanker.
Over a thousand islands are dotted along the coastline of Croatia’s Adriatic Sea – from party islands such as Hvar and quiet isles such as the Kornatis. A stunning place to take a sailing holiday, Croatia has rocky hidden bays with great snorkelling, cobbled ancient streets and friendly locals.
When to go to Croatia
For a warm break with lots of sun, go to Croatia between May and August. The busy yacht charter high season runs from July to August but we can find you some great last minute offers.
Sailing and weather conditions in Croatia
The bora (north-easterly), sirocco (south-east) and maestral winds are dominant in Croatia. The bora travels from land to sea and varies in force, while the 17 knot sirocco blows any time of year, bringing rain and rough seas. The afternoons see the maestral reach its peak (of up to 20 knots) as the heated land air is drawn down towards the sea.
Ports and facilities in Croatia
You can pre-book a berth in Croatia using apps such as Look Marina. Berthing can be expensive – however we know the area well so we can give you plenty of tips on places to stop to avoid marina fees. Marina facilities are usually of a high quality with good infrastructure.
Chartering a yacht in Italy will reward you with lifelong sailing memories. Each colourful region and island on its west coast has its own stunning landscapes, character and cuisine. If you’re into your food, we wholeheartedly recommend Italy for a yacht charter in 2020.
When to go to Italy
High season is mid-July to end of August, but the season starts in May and runs through to October. To avoid crowds in bays and beaches we recommend going on an Italian yacht charter in early June or late September.
Sailing and weather conditions in Italy
Italy’s stunning seas make an ideal holiday for intermediate sailors. There are generally light winds along the west coast; more experienced sailors may enjoy the brisker winds around Sardinia. In the south, the sirocco wind brings humid weather in the summer from Africa. The libeccio wind arrives from the south west, landing on the Sardinian and Tuscan coasts while the north-west mistral wind blows on Sardinia’s western coast. Temperatures in high season reach highs of 30°C/86°F.
Ports and facilities in Italy
Marina costs vary but can be expensive, however there are plenty of anchorages to keep costs down. Booking ahead in high season in popular marinas is necessary.
Spain is blessed with ideal sailing conditions and warm weather along its coastline and around its popular Balearic Islands. Add in the fine beaches, delicious tapas and lively bars and a Spanish yacht charter should be on your radar for your holiday next year.
When to go to Spain
The conditions are good in Spain from late April to early October, although July to late August usually sees an influx of visiting superyachts so ports can be busy.
Sailing and weather conditions in Spain
The Balearics experience north-westerlies averaging force 3 to 4 and the west coast south-easterlies force 2 to 3. The strong mistral winds blow in August in a north-westerley direction and can last for up to three days. Along the Costa Brava in summer, the winds are typically from the north.
Ports and facilities in Spain
The main ports of Palma and Barcelona have all the infrastructure you would need to start your charter. Mallorca has plenty of marinas (good to book ahead in high season), and there are many anchorages in coves all round the Balearics, but check if anchoring is permitted as there are several sea grass preservation areas.
The beautiful Turquoise Coast (or Turkish Riviera) is one of the most popular yacht charter destinations in Turkey and it’s not hard to see why. You can expect a relaxing trip with great food, archaeological finds, long seasons and hot weather.
When to go to Turkey
For cooler weather and warm seas, go in October. In the popular summer months, the meltemi winds will bring a cooling breeze.

Weather conditions are very favourable for relaxed sailing. Expect temperatures above 35°C/90°F in the height of summer. Northerly meltemi winds dominate in the summer, blowing up to force 6-7, with afternoon breezes coming from the west.
Ports and facilities in Turkey
Modern marinas are dotted along the coast at Bodrum, Gocek, Marmaris, Fethiye and Kas with good facilities, often just a day’s sail apart. Some can be expensive.
