Where to go ashore on Lefkas for the best beaches

Summer is nearly here and it’s time to appreciate the sheer joy sailing the Greek islands and Mediterranean. Lefkas, among the Ionian islands, is known for its wonderful beaches, white rocks and ancient Greek mythology. Paul Noakes, who was a Regional Operations Manager on Lefkas for several years, has shared with us some of his recommendations for lazy days on the shore of some of Greece’s finest coastline.

Recommended Lefkas beaches

• Afteli – You’ll find a very, small yet beautiful pebble beach, protected by tree-lined hills and vivid blue waters. You’ll find free showers and a good taverna nearby. It gets busy in peak season so make sure you get there early morning if you want to grab one of the limited sunbeds.

• Porto Katsiki – You’ll be awestruck when you find this remote beach in the south. It’s a crescent of sun-bleached white pebbles, lapped by cobalt sea and this is why it is a favourite among locals and visitors. There aren’t any many facilities here, so bring everything you need ashore. Get here early but stay for sunset, as the sun spreads across the entire beach in the afternoon. Many say this is the best beach on the island.

• Kathisma – One of the best organized beaches with tavernas and sunbeds, popular with local families who flock to enjoy the long stretch of golden sand and pebbles. Sunbeds come with iced water and watermelon to help you cool off on a hot day, as well as a handy locker for valuables. The view is outstanding with endless turquoise ocean to feast your eyes on. The southern end of the beach is less crowded but you might see some naturists. If the wind is up, be careful of the large waves which can challenge even the strongest swimmers.

• Nikiana – This is a small sand and shingle beach with a jetty to jump off, next to a small harbour. You’ll find sunbeds and good food from the beach bars, which have waitress service. You’ll have a good view across to the mainland too.
