LateSail Lowdown: How to plan an autumn yacht charter from Athens, Greece

March 6, 2018

Our charter company friends, MG Yachts, have been operating in Greece for more than 30 years. Assistant Manager, Laurence, has taken the time to share with us the team’s knowledge and experience about how to design an exciting charter itinerary from Athens. Read on for his recommendations on landmarks, secluded coves and restaurants to include in your trip.

Autumn weather in Greece

Laurence says: “In the autumn the weather is still warm here. You’ll find strong sunshine, good winds, hot water temperatures and, even better, good charter prices.”

Design your perfect itinerary

Laurence says: “Athens is a big capital and there is a wide choice of things to do. In my city, my personal preference is to enjoy seaside walks at night followed by some traditional Greek food.

“If you’re looking for peace and quiet, the uninhabited island of Dokos has a lovely cove with clear waters. The rocks and trees around its shore give it a natural beauty and it’s a great spot for snorkelling. You’ll find an excellent overnight anchorage at Poros, which is easily accessible both on anchor and on the pier with facilities available on the island. Those planning on leaving from Alimos can head for Agia Marina on Aegina. It’s a great first stop, as it’s only two hours from Athens.”

Laurence says: “Athens has the Acropolis and the ancient city at its feet. It doesn’t matter if you’ve seen it before, as it still has the power to enthral with its magic every time you see it. Each island has something unique to boast about and some fantastic landmarks include the church tower on Poros, the volcano in Methana and the old theatre in Epidavros.”

Local restaurants as rated by locals

Laurence recommends: “Tzieris restaurant in Ermioni is on the edge of the rocks, overlooking the sea. From here you’ll find a fantastic view of Hydra and Dokos islands opposite. The food isn’t that expensive and the fish selection is a highlight. My personal tip is to try the octopus on the grill, which is something you will never forget.”

To eat and drink like a local when you are on charter, Ouzo is the drink you must try – just take care with it as it is a strong spirit! Don’t leave Greece without trying a souvlaki, the original tasty Greek fast food with small pieces of meat and vegetables grilled on a skewer.
