Thailand is a bareboat yacht charter paradise and the perfect sailing spot for those wanting to island hop between impressive landscapes, bask in a tropical climate and enjoy fantastic diving. This exotic cruising ground boasts the Instagram-ready Phang Nga Bay with its towering limestone islands of Ko Phanak and Koh Hong, as well as a fishing village on stilts at Koh Pan Yi.
Enjoy cliff jumping and swimming at Koh Phi Phi, stroll the palm-fringed sandy shores of the The Beach film set at Koh Phi Phi Ley or kayak through the mangrove forest at Koh Lanta. If you love scuba diving, explore the coral reefs at the Similan Islands’ national park or the Surin Islands in the Andaman Sea. For a lively atmosphere, the famous moon parties are at Koh Phangan and you can recover at Bottle Beach.
Enjoy sailing all-year round in Thailand’s coastal region, which doesn’t suffer typhoons and has gentle seasonal monsoons.
The most popular time to sail in Thailand is November to March and there are two distinct seasons:
• November to April – The North East Monsoon (dry season) has winds averaging 10-15 knots from the northeast. Temperatures are around 30°C or 86°F with plenty of sunny, dry weather.
• May to October – The South West Monsoon (wet season) has slightly stronger winds and some rainy periods, which usually only last 1-2 hours in the afternoon. From June to October these south west winds start to gust but rarely exceed 25 knots and you can have extended periods of rain lasting up to five days.
The air temperatures vary from 28°C to 35°C with an average sea temperature of 28°C to 32°C. The tidal range is up to 3 meters at high water springs.
From the US, fly long haul to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK), Thailand’s principal airport, with flights from the major carriers, and is located 20 miles outside of the city center. You can fly from Washington DC with Qatar via Doha, Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, Emirates via Dubai and Ethiad via Abu Dhabi. Thai Airways provides flights from Bangkok to Phuket. Phuket airport is a 30-minute taxi ride to our base.
7-Day from Phuket
Day 1: Phuket to Koh Hong (10nm). Start off your bareboat yacht charter by journeying to the scenic islands of Koh Hong, where you can anchor between towering rock facades. Take a dingy to explore the tunnel leading to an enclosed lagoon where you can view the “hong” (room). The islands are part of the Ao Phnag-nga National Park which is known for its lush mangrove forests, countless caves and soaring limestone.
Day 2: Koh Roi (10nm). Go onshore to explore the hong of Koh Roi. At dusk, you may get to see thousands of fruit bats take flight for an evening of feeding.
Day 3: Koh Hong Krabi (10nm). Next up is the Koh Hong Krabi archipelago where the islands are remote and the waters are teeming with fish. Throw out your line and see if you can catch a mackerel or rainbow runner. Swim off the beautiful beach into the warm, clear water.
Day 4: Rai Le Beach (10nm). Have a laid-back beach day on Rai Le surrounded by coconut palm trees. Enjoy trying out the restaurants on the beach where you can admire the shimmering waters of the Andaman Sea.
Day 5: Koh Phi Phi Don (15nm). Anchor at Ton Sai Bay where you’ll find quality facilities and a lively night scene among the bars. To the south is Phi Phi Le, where you will find excellent snorkeling and rugged cliffs.
Day 6: Koh Rang Yai (25nm). Rent a bike to traverse the island, play a round of miniature golf, or swim at the beach.
Day 7: Phuket (10nm). Disembark.
7-Day from Koh Samui
Day 1: Bo Phut Beach. It’s close to the famous Big Buddha on Koh Samui. Discover coral reefs, impressive waterfalls, temples, markets and elephant trekking further inland.
Day 2: Koh Phangan. The full moon party draws a global crowd to Haad Rin Beach. This remote paradise has secluded beaches and a walking trail that starts at the beach and leads to spectacular waterfalls.
Day 3: Koh Tao. It’s named for the Hawksbill and green turtles that used the island as a breeding ground before it was inhabited by people. Discover its underwater world of marine life when you snorkel or dive in one of its hidden coves.
Day 4: Maenam Beach. It’s great for children because its waters are calm and shallow. To the west of the beach sits the temple Wat Na Pralam, a slightly rundown building that evokes a real sense of Koh Samui’s history. Go to John’s Garden for traditional Thai cuisine in a tropical garden setting.
Day 5: Chong Mon Beach. Hop in a kayak and paddle to the tiny island of Ko Fan Yai, then come back to Chong Mon Beach to recline with a refreshing beverage in hand.
Day 6: Big Buddha Beach. Big Buddha stands at more than 12 meters high on the little island of Koh Fan, which is joined to the mainland by a causeway. If you’re looking to fully relax, the renowned Ban Sabai Retreat Spa and Resort sits directly on the sand of Buddha Beach and offers an oasis of treatments. Every Sunday, Secret Garden Bungalows offers live music, drinks and Thai BBQ on the beach for a very reasonable price.
Day 7: Bo Phut Beach. Disembark.
